Excerpt: Witness : I Was asked about twelve months ago to sign a petition in their behalf. William Potts asked me to sign the petition. I refused to sign it. I was asked four or five times to sign it, but I don't remember by whom. The most of the people who asked me were union men. I was also asked by a person who was not connected with the union to sign the petition, but I don't remember who it was. After Wild recovered from his wounds he came back to work at my place. I don't remember bow long he was ill. The other men continued to work for ma, and Childos is at present in my employment. The Chairman : Did Wild say nothing to you when he left about being afraid to work ? Witness : Wild did not say anything to me, bnt I judged that it was through being afraid of violence that he left. I have not seen him since he left my employment. The Chairman : Had you ever any dispute with the union relative to discharging some brickmakers ? Witness : Some time ago I discharged some brickmakers for drunkenness. They had been unable to attend to their work for four days. After discharging them I received an intimation from the Brickmakers' Association that they wanted me to take the men back : and I said no. The Chairman : Why did you do so : was it through fear or any threat they sent you ? Witness : No, it was not through fear...
